What is Jock Itch?

Jock itch (medically known as tinea cruris) is a fungal skin infection that affects the groin area (upper part of the thighs, buttocks and abdomen) caused by fungi of the dermatophyte family, such as Trichophyton rubrum.

The fungus grows in an environment that is warm and moist, so doing activities that enhance or maintain a warm, moist environment may contribute to infection. For example, wearing sweaty, wet or tight-fitting clothing, especially for extended periods of time, creates an optimal environment for a jock itch infection. Contaminated clothing, towels and even your hands if you touch the infected area can transmit jock itch, so it can also spread from other infected body parts such as your feet if you are suffering from an athlete’s foot infection.

Jock itch is more common in men than in women.
