What Exactly Is Athlete’s Foot

Believe it or not, many people actually think that this fungal infection happens only to athletes, or they won’t have it unless they participate in sports or wear tight footwear. Others think the chronic itching on their feet is natural and it will eventually go away. These people go about their everyday lives not knowing they may already have athlete’s foot.

You can actually have athlete’s foot whether or not you play sports. You can contract it by simply getting into contact with the infected part of the skin. You can have this skin disease regardless of your age, lifestyle, or hygiene habits.

Having athlete’s foot will give you the following symptoms:

  • Itching, especially between the toes
  • Scaling, flaking, and peeling of the skin
  • Blistering and developing of cracked skin
  • Pain, burning sensation, and swelling of exposed raw tissue
  • Bad feet odor

These symptoms become evident when the fungi take hold on your skins and feeds off your skin’s structural proteins. The microscopic organisms often inhabit your feet because it is often warm and damp from wearing shoes. The spaces in-between your toes provide an especially excellent breeding ground for them.

Athlete’s foot, however, can be easily prevented. The most effective way is to not wear shoes to prevent fungi from inhabiting. If you must wear shoes, try to keep your feet dry at all times. Choose footwear that provides enough ventilation for your feet. You can also look for shoes made of materials with anti-bacterial properties.

Give your feet enough time to dry off after coming out of the shower. Never share footwear with others. If you are going to wear shoes from bowling alleys, ice skating rinks, and other recreational areas that require borrowed footwear, use an antifungal spray to reduce the risk of infection.
